Thirteen

Laying on the couch, I have my books scattered in front of me while I do my homework. My head nods in beat with the music while I write down my next math equation.

“What are you doing?”

I jump, being caught off guard. Chase laughs, making me look his way.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” he says as he walks my way.

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” I mumble as I roll over onto my back. “When did you get back?”

“About thirty minutes ago. I caught up with Nate for a bit before I came looking for you,” he says as he takes a seat on the couch next to me.

“Sounds like a blast,” I deadpan.

Chase raises his hand, lightly grazing my throat. “Your heart is beating fast. Are you excited to be near me, Willow?” he asks, licking his lips.

“Never,” I rasp.

Chase runs his hand from my throat, between my breasts, down my stomach to my hips. He roughly squeezes my hip, slightly pulling me into him. “Such temptation,” he murmurs.

“Don’t start anything you won’t finish,” I warn.

Chase leans down, his lips ghosting mine. “But where’s the fun in that?” he grumbles.

Chase hovers above me, waiting to see if I make a move. Our stare-down is cut short when his phone vibrates.

“You better get that,” I say bitterly as he gets off the couch, letting me go.

“Green really isn’t your color,” he says as he stares at his phone. “I need to head out for a while, I’ll see you later.”

“Wait.” I jump off the couch, walking toward him. “Where are you going?”

“I have some things to take care of.”

“Can I go with you?”

“Maybe some other time, Willow.”

“I’m tired of all the secrets. You talk about me not trusting you, well give me a reason to. Share something with me. Tell me where you sneak off to in the middle of the night. What do you do when I’m at school? Give me something,” I plead.

“Why is this so important to you?” Chase asks.

“Does that matter? Give me something or I’m done. I’ll walk out of here, dangerous or not.”

When he doesn’t say anything, I shake my head.

“Your silence is answer enough.”

I walk away, but he grabs my arm, pulling me into him.

“Fine. I can’t tell you everything, but I’ll show you a part of it. Will that suffice?”

“It’s a step in the right direction.”

“Fine. Go change. We leave in ten.”

He lets me go and turns away, but I grab his arm, turning him back to me.

“Thank you.” I lean in, pressing a kiss to his cheek.

“Whatever.” He clears his throat.

“Yeah, ‘whatever.’”

I leave him in the living room, heading to the bedroom. I pull the clothes I have out. Usually I would just keep the clothes I have on, but I want to look good for Chase.

Wait, what?

Fuck. Why do I care?

I pace for a minute before returning to the living room.

“Ready already?”

“Um, no. Can I borrow your phone? Also, do you have Hailee’s phone number?”

“Sure.”

He pulls out his phone, pressing a couple of buttons before handing it over.
