Psi Division was dark when I arrivedâthe power mustâve gone out. But the building had escaped Tempestâs rampage intact. I banged on the glass door with my fist.
âSomeone open this door or I shoot it open,â I yelled. The lobby was dark, empty. Nothing moved.
All right, then. I took a step back, covered my eyes, and put two rounds through the glass. My ears rang at the gunshots. Spiderweb cracks appeared in the door. I slammed the butt of my gun into the broken glass. It shattered, raining glass into the entranceway and opening up a hole large enough for me to climb through. I pulled my coat over my head to protect myself from falling fragments as I stepped through, my shoes crunching on the glass.
I held the gun at my side as I made my way through the darkened corridors. âThis is Jay Escobar,â I called. âI know youâre here! Your cars are all outside.â Only my own echo answered me.
I scowled and tried to retrace the steps Iâd taken through the building this morning. I found the quiet rooms and went one by one, throwing open the doors. Nothing.
âYou little shits,â I said. âWhere are you hiding?â
I scratched my beard. Calm down. Think like them. Tempestâs going crazy. When Yllia died, Curtis said several of the handlers felt echoes of the backlash. Maybe it was the same thing here. Or maybe they figured it wouldnât be long before Tempest paid them a visit. There was nowhere for them to run from hereâthe only port on the East Island was designed to bring food and supplies for the Maydays themselves, and those ships only came twice a week. If they wanted to escape the island, theyâd have to cross the bridge and head for the Western Port like everyone else. So they had to be here. They must have a panic room. The basement?
I wandered the corridors until I found an elevator and a set of stairs. The elevator was down, so I hit the stairs. They went down about three times further than I expected. At the bottom, I was greeted with another corridor lit with red emergency lighting and a steel door like something youâd find on a Cold War fallout shelter.
I found the intercom beside the door. If the emergency lighting was on down here, I figured I could assume the intercom was powered as well. I thumbed the button.
âHowâs it going, everyone? Enjoying yourselves in there? Itâs Jay Escobar. Iâm sure you know who I am by now. Seems weâve got a bit of a situation above ground. Maybe youâd be so kind as to let me in so we can discuss it.â
The reply was instantaneous. âFuck you, Escobar.â
I grinned. âCurtis. I donât know if youâve lost your manners or found your balls. Iâll give you a pass this time and put it down to fear. You should be scared, you know. You think this little cardboard box fort of yours is going to
