CHAPTER NINETEEN

Using the in-flight wifi, Max sent a message to Mikel Alvero, giving him an overview of the events. He kept things vague and non-incriminating, just in case some nosy law enforcement agency happened to come into possession of the records in question.

As had been established, however, Alvero was no meathead, and he easily read between the lines of Max’s report, responding with an enthusiastic,

“LOL! That should hit them where it hurts the worst.”

He followed that message with two emojis: a hammer and an eggplant. Max winced but couldn’t help chuckling.

“What’s with the laughs?” Bembe asked.

Immediately upon taking off, the little guy had fallen asleep, leaving no doubt as to how taxing the last stretch had been for him. While the skater punk certainly appeared youthful, it was clear now he was not that at all, and it seemed to Max his friend had begun moving slower just in the time he’d known the guy.

Max turned his phone screen so Bembe could see, and the Mayan huffed a laugh.

“Alvero, huh? Wish I could have met him.”

“Just picture a smart version of Axel,” Max said, making sure to speak loudly enough so Axel would overhear. “As difficult as that may be.”

Axel performed a rude gesture before going back to drinking his tiny glass of complimentary champagne.

Or maybe it just looks tiny in his giant hands, Max thought.

His phone pinged, and he looked down to see another message from Alvero.

“Check out Ahmed Hassan in Cairo. Sketchy, but knows everything.”

The next message included a series of digits, which Max assumed was Hassan’s contact number.

“Well, that’s interesting,” Max murmured.

“Brah?”

Max showed Bembe the screen once more.

“Def interesting,” the Mayan agreed. “You think this Hassan knows about the crystal? Is that included in the ‘everything’?”

“No idea,” Max said. “But we didn’t loop Alvero in on everything anyway, so he may not have that information.”

“And by information, you mean the crystal?”

“Exactly. He mentioned that he’d read the codices, but that several parts had him stumped.”

“The parts I read back in Madrid, at the Hotel Urban.”

“Also exactly. The reason that made sense to you, besides you being…well, you…is that you have intimate knowledge of the crystal. Without that inside knowledge, not much of that part of the codex would make any sense at all, even in vague terms.”

“Gotta say, I’m not real comfortable with you using words like ‘intimate’ when it comes to the crystal. You make it sound like it has a crush on me or something.”

Max laughed and shook his head. “You know, for someone who’s been around for centuries, you have the maturity of a twelve-year-old.”

“Twelve? That’s a promotion! That’s also what keeps me young, brah,” Bembe said, contradicting himself by stretching broadly and letting out a pain-tinged moan.

Max sobered immediately. “Are you okay, Bembe?”

“Yeah, dude. I’m solid. It’s just been a long six hundred years, that’s all.”
