Small circles of water dotted the page, expanding outward into the paper as they fell from Zosia’s cheeks. His beautiful children, who’d kept him alive all those years in prison, were dead.

Czeslaw’s wife was also dead and had been for some time. She’d died before Zosia even met Czeslaw. Zosia’s stomach leapt.

She dropped her head into her hands. God, forgive me for my selfish thoughts. Please let those two innocent children and their mother find rest in Your Kingdom. Zosia still didn’t know if God was listening, but if her prayers would allow those children peace, she’d send up a thousand.

“You deserve to know what happened to your family.” She remembered what Czeslaw said to her. “I know my children are alive and safe. You deserve that relief, too.”

He needed to know about her baby. Their baby. If she told him, it could be a tiny bit of light in a life that had now turned even darker.

But telling him now, after she’d learned his wife was dead, would only make her an opportunist.

She knew she had to wait for him to come to her.

The letter rested like an anvil in her hands. She dropped it to the floor, crossed herself again, and hurried toward the door.
