If you move the center of a circle along a straight line perpendicular to the circle, you get a cylinder (Fig. 44), which, if hollow, is a pipe and, if solid and straight, is a column, one of the most important elements in architectural construction.

In the examples just mentioned, the pipe and the column, the volume V of these three-dimensional figures is given by the area A of the moving circle times the length h of its line. For example, the volume of a circular column of height h generated by a horizontal circle of radius r is given by:

V = π × r2x h.

Different three-dimensional figures can be generated by moving plane figures other than a circle. For example, moving a vertical square or a vertical rectangle horizontally, one obtains a square or a rectangular prism (Fig. 45).
