In words: the slope is equal to the change in y divided by the change in x. We can use this formula when it is not clear from the plot by how much the graph goes up or down when going one unit to the right or when we are only given two random points of a linear function.

To determine the linear function that goes through two given points P(xp, yp) and Q(xq, yq), we first compute the changes in x- and y-direction by subtracting the respective coordinates:

Δx = xq - xp

Δy = yq - yp
