The tires of Max’s beat-up police car crunched on the gravel road that led to the landfill owned by VB Enterprises. The sun shimmered on the horizon, sending sparks of orange and pink swirling through the darkened clouds. Energy zipped through his veins despite the early hour...and his lack of sleep. Samantha might have been behind a closed door, but trying to rest with her so damn close had been torture.

For once, he’d been more than happy to be out the door at the crack of dawn. A call last night to the waste-management company Booker Harlan worked at had told him the man came to work early and could usually be found at the scale house at the dump. The rest of his schedule was up in the air, so Max had to get to the landfill in Jersey by sunrise if he wanted to speak with him. Trying the phone number he’d been given certainly wasn’t working, and the home address he’d been given was vacant.

Samantha had still been asleep when he’d crept around his apartment in the near dark. Only the streetlights spilling in from the living room window had assisted him in getting ready. She’d promised to stay at his place all day if he went to some stupid gala event with her. She’d keep her promise, but he’d asked Jack to sit outside his apartment just to make sure no one tried to get to her while he was gone.

She’d played him. He didn’t need to go to some damn gala to get the information he needed out of Teddy, and using her as bait was dangerous. But here he was again, agreeing to do something so far from his job description he was surprised he didn’t have his lieutenant breathing down his neck.

He’d be pissed if he weren’t dying to see her in a slinky black dress. The woman had one hell of a body. She shouldn’t be covering it up all the time. And because of his agreement, she’d be safe for one more day while he was out chasing leads. Maybe Booker would be the ticket he needed to find the asshole responsible for three murders and two murder attempts on Samantha. Then he could enjoy himself tomorrow night at a fancy event with a beautiful woman on his arm.

If she’d still want him to go. Somehow, Samantha had become important to him over the last few days and he wasn’t ready to let her go. At least not until they finished what they’d started in his shower last night.

He drove through the open gate at the entrance of the landfill. Piles of trash dotted the landscape as far as he could see, which even with little light was pretty damn far. The lane he drove down led to a lone building in the middle of the mounds of trash. A dozen bulldozers parked in an uneven line on one side of the building; an idling red truck sat in front of it.
