CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Winter

The world spins around me as I plummet through the air. The wind screams in my ears, and my hair whips around my face. I can see nothing but darkness and stars, and I wonder if I'm going to die.

And then, just as suddenly as it began, it's over. I land on solid ground, my legs buckling beneath me. I look up, gasping for air, and see the others standing around me, looking relieved.

"We made it," Elena says, grinning from ear to ear.

She offers me her hand and pulls me to standing. I check a second time, just to make sure I have it right.

Damon. Alec. Hank. We're all here.

I sigh in relief. Even though Alec and I just met these three, they feel so important to me already. With nothing but ravenous creatures roaming this dimension, we need each other.

"Look where we are." Damon points above us.

I gasp. Just when I thought this pocket dimension couldn't get any weirder ...

Above us, the night sky is illuminated by a swirling mass of colors. It's like nothing I've ever seen before: a cosmic aurora borealis that stretches as far as the eye can see. It's beautiful, mesmerizing, and terrifying all at once.

Next to us is a massive tree, its trunk so large it looks like it could hold up the sky. Its leaves shimmer in the dim light, and I notice that the branches go up and up, as if they could go on forever. It's like being in the most beautiful dream ever.

"Well," Elena says, "whoever created this world was certainly an artist."

I nod, too dumbstruck to answer.

"But where do we go now?" Damon puts his hands on his hips and turns in a slow circle. "I have no clue where the river might be."

Hank shrugs. "Maybe we just follow the tree? It looks like the tallest thing around, so we might be able to see the river from up high."

We all agree and start walking towards the tree. As we get closer, we notice something strange. The bark is covered in carvings, symbols and words etched into the wood.

"What do they say?" Hank asks, running his hand over the markings.

Alec leans in to get a closer look. "I think they're spells. Magical incantations, maybe?"

Damon snorts. "Like we need more magic in our lives right now."

We all laugh, but I can see the worry in their eyes. This is oddly similar to the orb we found in the cave. It's like we're getting a sneak peek at the inner workings of this dimension.

Instead of being comforting, though, its unsettling.

"What are we waiting for?" I grasp the first branch. "Let's climb."

"Hey." Alec steps closer. "How is your arm?"

Throbbing like hell.

"It's working," I say with a strained smile.

"You sure you're up for climbing?"

To prove myself, I climb onto the first level of branches. "Are you?"

He smirks. "You know I'm good at this."

I roll my eyes. "And you only take every opportunity to remind me."

The five of us start climbing. With thick, close branches, it’s almost too easy.
