Communicate Early and Often

When designing change initiatives, one of the most important aspects is buy-in. A key way to secure buy-in is to start collaborating early with employees at all levels who will be impacted. The more interaction you have with your customers and stakeholders throughout the process, the greater your opportunity for a successful implementation and enduring support. Your stakeholders will feel valued and respected because you’ve been transparent with them and they’ve been part of the solution!

What happens, however, when you receive feedback from stakeholders that you don’t use? If you don’t proactively communicate with them, your relationship could suffer; the stakeholders may feel slighted or disrespected because they went out of their way to give you their opinion and you didn’t use it. This is where your communication and relationship management skills are helpful.2 To calm the situation, you can talk to the stakeholders and share that you are grateful for their ideas and suggestions: They caused you to look deeper into the issue and create an even better solution. Likewise, if someone gives you a suggestion that you know immediately would not be viable, use your communication and relationship management skills at that moment and explain why that suggestion won’t work at this time for your company.
