Simultaneously, Albert Ellis was also working on a form of cognitive therapy that descended from the Stoic idea that it is not events that causes us distress, but the meaning we attribute to them. His ideas were developed as REBT. Although there is a huge overlap between both forms of therapy, Beckian cognitive therapy is unarguably the most influential and widely used form of therapy in the modern world.
How Does CBT Work?
CBT is a goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that uses a practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving. CBT aims to change the thinking patterns and behaviors that are behind the difficulties people face, and by so doing, changing the way they feel. To change people's thinking patterns and their behaviors, CBT focuses on the thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and images that are held (the cognitive processes of a person) and how these processes relate to how a person behaves, as a way of dealing with emotional problems.
It is noteworthy to mention that CBT is not designed for lifelong participation, but instead as a short term based therapy aimed to help people meet their goals in the near future. Most CBT treatment lasts somewhere around five to ten months, with patients attending a session per week, and with each session lasting for about 50 to 60-minute. During this time, the patient and therapist are working in collaboration to understand the underlying problems and developing new strategies for tackling them. A set of principles are introduced to the patients through CBT, which they can apply whenever they feel the need to, and that will last them for a lifetime.
For CBT to be effective, the therapist and the patient must both be invested in the process and willing to participate actively â which implies that both the therapist and the patient would need to work as a team to identify the problems the patient is facing, and come up with strategies to address them to create meaningful and positive solutions.
