CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Every moment spent with Miss Diana surpassed every moment before, and James found himself admiring the young woman all the more. Their conversations ranged from what the ton expected from him to his love of magic. But it was times like this, when he listened to her speak of herself and what interested her, that he fell under her spell.

He had collected her and her companion, Miss Jenny, from the school this early Friday afternoon so they could peruse his library and choose a book to borrow. Then they were to have dinner together after.

Bringing her to Penford Place again was foolish, he knew. Yet as they would be inside the main house, and he had asked Amelia not to leave the cottage until the start of the festivities in the stable, the chances of Miss Diana learning about Amelia were low.

He despised keeping this secret, but every excuse to explain Amelia’s presence fell flat to his ears. It was far easier to say nothing and wait for the inevitable day when the woman—and her unborn child—were gone. Then there would be no need for explanations at all.

As Miss Diana spoke of her love of horses, James could not help but appreciate the lovely blonde curls that hung down to her shoulders beneath her large green bonnet. Or how smooth her skin looked. How plump her lips were. With each day they spent together, his admiration for her grew.

Although he had not kissed her again since that day in the secret passageway, the temptation had not waned. Rather it had increased, causing a longing he struggled to contain, and he turned away lest he was caught staring.

“But I’ve other new activities that I’d like to pursue,” she was saying, her cheeks turning a delectable pink as she pulled closer the parcel wrapped in brown paper on her lap. “And I believe you can help me in this endeavor.” Her gloved fingers strummed the top of the parcel, and she laughed. “You’re worse than a child, Barrington.”

“Am I? How so?”

“I can see the curiosity for what I have here,” she said. When he glanced at Miss Jenny, Miss Diana added, “And don’t look at her. She won’t tell you, either.” She gave a mock sigh of exasperation. “Oh, very well. I meant to wait until we were seated in the library, but here. You may open it now.”

He took the parcel and, for a moment, had a feel of regret for not having a gift in return. But how was he to know she would be presenting him with something? He pulled on the string, unwrapped the parcel, and inside was a book. “The Art of Juggling,” he read aloud. “I don’t have this book. How did you know I was searching for it?”

Miss Diana shrugged. “I made inquiries at the bookshop. Do you like it?”

“Very much so,” he replied. “I’ll cherish it always.” He set the book on the bench beside him. “Now, what are these new interests you have? Are you saying you would like to learn to juggle?”

She laughed.
