It was a damned cold morning for Florida. He had dressed in long pants, a t-shirt from the Smoking Tuna Saloon and a light jacket. He checked his phone. The temperature in Miami was a brisk 40 degrees. They were talking on the news something about a polar vortex that was blasting its way south. The Midwest had temps close to the surface of Mars.

Having experienced below zero wind chills in New York, Marlow was hoping he wouldn’t see them in Florida. He took the list he had printed out the night before from his pocket and studied it in the line at McDonalds.

The Escobars owned a lot of properties. Marlow checked the lists against a map of Miami as he waited. People moved forward. Marlow stepped forward too. He ordered coffee and sausage biscuits and gravy as well as a hash brown. Marlow carried them to a table and sat down. He opened the biscuits and poured the gravy over them. He added sweetener to the coffee and stirred it in along with a couple of cubes of ice.

Marlow wished that Dave Parker would call, but he wasn’t counting on it. Parker was still pissed at him for breaking into the Escobar offices last night.

Marlow ate his breakfast as he studied the map. He tried to figure out where the girl was being held. She was out there somewhere.
