Chapter Ten
Leaving Lisa to sleep, Ross headed upstairs. As much as he would love to curl up with her, there were things he had to do. When he reached the top of the stairs, he contemplated locking the door to the basement and decided not to bother. Although he was under no illusion that Lisa was settled here, he was quite sure he could trust her not to try to run. Something had shifted. She was warming up to him.
Aware he’d neglected his work over the past few days, he went to his office and scanned through his emails, finding nothing of importance. Finn ran the company that kept the family finances flowing in while Ross oversaw operations at home on Glenlogie Estate. With Neil, Duncan, and Jamie all working with him, things tended to run smoothly.
Taking his phone from his pocket, he quickly sent a couple of texts. The first was to Callum Fraser, whose firm he’d hired to protect Maddie. He asked him to find out all he could about Mark, the man Lisa had told him was missing from those they’d eliminated. The second text was to Neil, instructing him and Duncan, who usually formed a double act, to track down Lisa’s sister and bring her here to the estate. If it was possible she was at risk, Ross wanted her somewhere they could protect her.
Within a minute, he had replies from both men, confirming they’d carry out his instructions. Ross nodded in satisfaction. That was what he liked to see—efficiency. A text had also come in from Marco di Angelo, telling him he’d collected the troublesome baggage. He wasn’t sure he liked the Italian referring to Sadie that way, but he couldn’t do anything about it. He just had to hope Marco would treat Sadie with the respect she deserved and that she could handle the arrogant alpha the way she did the men in her own family.
He put the phone in his pocket and went in search of Finn. He hadn’t seen much of his alpha over the past few days, partly because Finn wasn’t in the mood for company and partly because he’d shut himself away to obsessively watch Lisa on the security monitors. Following the smell of food, Ross made his way to the dining room where he found Finn sitting alone at the table. He was carving slices from a haunch of venison but the expression on his face suggested he’d prefer to be chopping someone into little pieces. Ross just hoped that someone wasn’t him. He was in no mood for a fight.
“Did you get anything out of her?” Finn asked as Ross took a seat. He gave him a wry smile. “Apart from an orgasm?”
“Multiple orgasms.” Ross couldn’t keep the smug grin off his face. “She’s starting to open up a bit. She still swears she wasn’t going to hurt Maddie.”
Finn looked skeptical. It was hardly surprising he didn’t trust the woman who’d tried to whisk his mate away under cover of darkness.
