Suddenly, the tiger darts forward, but Gregory is too quick. He leaps over the tiger, landing behind him and biting down hard on his hind leg.

The tiger roars in pain, but Gregory doesn't let go. Marlow and Brynn burst from the trees, Marlow shifting into a gorilla. He beats his chest and roars, ready to jump into the fray.

But Professor McGuire is already shifting back. He looks down at me with a mixture of shame and fear in his eyes. "I'm sorry," he says, his voice trembling. "I didn't mean to...I didn't want to hurt you."

I push myself up, wincing at the pain in my back. "What the hell was that?" I demand.

"I don't know," Professor McGuire admits, his shoulders sagging. "I just...I couldn't let you go back there. I'm sorry."

Gregory shifts back into his human form, his face pale. "We need to go," he says, his voice shaking. "Now."

I nod, still in shock. Has our teacher lost his mind?

Marlow shifts to his human form. "Dude. You tried to kill her."

Professor McGuire's upper lip curls. "If you bring the Silver Hunters back here, it will all be your fault."

"We have to go now," I say, grabbing Marlow and Brynn's arms. "Forget about scouting. We can't waste any more time."

Gregory nods and falls in step behind us as we make our way out of the back lot. My heart is pounding in my chest as we move quickly down the abandoned streets, keeping to the shadows as best we can.

"He's like a wild animal now," Brynn breathes. "Just days ago he was teaching me physics."

"I didn't know you were a gorilla shifter," Gregory says to Marlow.

"I didn't know either." Marlow rubs the back of his head and grins. "That's the first time it's happened. Pretty cool, huh?"

The boys fist-bump, and I scowl at them. "So glad you two are having fun, but we're about to walk into some real crazy shit. So let's focus, okay?"

Maybe I'm being too harsh on them, but Professor McGuire freaked me out. If whatever happened to him in the school broke him, then what's in store for us?

As we get closer to the school, I can feel the tension in the air. It's like electricity, crackling just beneath the surface. We stick to the shadows, moving stealthily towards the building. I can hear the sound of our footsteps ringing out like gunshots in the silence.

"We're almost there," Gregory whispers, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of danger.

Suddenly, a hand reaches out and grabs me by the shoulder. I spin around, ready to fight, but it's just Marlow.

"Easy there, tiger," he says, grinning at his own joke.

I roll my eyes and push past him, my heart pounding in my chest. We finally reach the edge of the woods, and I can see the bridge over the river looming up ahead. Right across from it is the main entrance to the school.

"The boiler room, huh?" I ask Marlow, keeping my eyes on the school. It looks deserted, but of course it's not.
