Szolnok 1944

There were more bomb attacks after that day – many more. The ’Frantic’ attack,46 as it was named, lasted from June until September. Szolnok was bombed twelve times, leaving many lives lost. Much of the town centre was destroyed; the train station was demolished and factories and mills hit. During this period, a large number of the population, in a mass exodus, fled. So, on the arrival of the Soviet troops in November 1944 to this decimated town, only a few thousand people, out of approximately thirty-nine thousand, remained.
