Though less deadly than lung cancer, throat and oral cancers can be fatal or disfiguring. Whatever the role of marijuana, tobacco smoking and heavy alcohol drinking are known to aggravate the risk of throat and oral cancers. Patients are therefore well advised to avoid heavy drinking and tobacco smoking.

Recent scientific studies show that marijuana smoking is a lesser hazard to the lungs than tobacco. For many years, it was widely assumed that marijuana posed similar or worse lung cancer risks than tobacco. This assumption was upset by the first large-scale epidemiological study of marijuana smoking and lung cancer in 2005 by a team of researchers led by Dr. Mia Hashibe and Dr. Paul Tashkin at the University of California at Los Angeles [Hashibe104]. In a survey of 1,209 patients with lung, oral, laryngeal and esophageal cancers, the team found no relation between marijuana smoking and cancer. Dr. Tashkin, a leading expert on smoking-related disease, fully expected to find a high cancer incidence from marijuana smoking. Much to his surprise, he found no increased cancer risk even in heavy long-term users. In at least one category-lung cancer among relatively short-term users - the data even showed lower cancer rates for marijuana smokers than non-users.
