THIS REPLACEMENT CAT—which was the only way Lucy could think of it, because cute as it might be, it wasn’t Charlie—had no problem riding home in its cage in the back seat of Marcus’s SUV. Andy, if it had been him, had also left a litter box, litter, food dish and food. Even a few cat toys.

He’d thought of everything—but why?

Why give her a cat that looked like Charlie? What did he hope to accomplish?

Surely enough time had passed for him to forget her, to no longer hold on to his burning hatred of her. Yet he’d tracked her down, visited her workplace, asked questions about her, and left her a cat. What could it possibly mean?

Once they got into her apartment, Marcus set down the cat carrier, took her shoulders, and asked, “What do you want to do, Lucy?”

Looking into those compelling blue eyes, seeing the warmth and understanding there, feeling the strength in his hands, a whole bunch of ideas came to mind. How nice it would be to lead him to her room, close the door and lose herself in his touch and taste, to pretend everything at the shop hadn’t happened. Her gaze dipped to his mouth, oh that wonderful mouth... He’d only kissed her a few times, and already she felt drawn to him, practically addicted.

But she wasn’t a horrible, selfish person, so before she could indulge her own needs, she needed to figure out the situation with the cat.

As if he’d read her thoughts, Marcus’s mouth tilted in a crooked smile. “I like the way you think, and just so you know, whenever you’re ready, count me in.”

Wow, talk about temptation. “Okay, thank you.” His quick smile warmed all the cold places inside her. “I figure we should get the cat settled first.”

“Agreed.” He put an affectionate peck on her lips. “Will you keep him?”

Just then the cat let out a loud, plaintive meow. Apparently, his patience with the cage had ended. “My replacement cat,” she said, and then felt like a jerk. It wasn’t the kitty’s fault that he was being used...for something. “He’s really beautiful, isn’t he?”

“He is.”

“And he seems to like me.”

“He’s been as obvious about it as I have.”

She grinned. “Yes, I’m going to keep him.” Could she keep Marcus too? “It’s weird, but I think I’m already attached.” Had Andy assumed she would be?

The thoughts continued to swirl in her head, making it impossible for her to settle on, and sort out, a single one.

“He’s dependent on you,” Marcus said, and she knew he was making a point. Maybe a good point, but still, there was a world of difference in a seventeen-year-old almost-adult and a small cat.

“Cat box first,” she decided while turning a full circle in her living room, wondering where she should put it.

“A suggestion?” Marcus took the box in one hand, the heavy litter in the other. “How about your spare bedroom for now?”

“I suppose that’s better than the kitchen.”

He kissed her again—man, she loved that he felt free to do that now—and said, “Give me just a minute.
