Chapter 7: Flight to New York

Hotel Richmond, New York

Rajeev Lodha had given his suits for ironing. He would get them back by 08:30 a.m., dress up and go for the breakfast at 9:00 then move for the debrief at 9:30 and, finally, move for the final meeting with Bilal at 10:00. It was still early but not in New York City. The clocked ticked; it was 8:00 a.m. The MARCOS were ready to play their roles. No one knew the extent of Rajeev’s treachery, but the threat to the national security was real.

On his cue, Siddhartha entered the building dressed in a black waiter suit.

‘Welcome, sir. How may I help you?’ The secret service agent dressed in civilian clothes for show was courteous but visibly alert.

‘Here to meet the Sri Lankan delegation. Eleventh floor.’ Sri Lankans had granted a last-minute invite. Such requests were a routine affair between the agencies to help create a smokescreen and cover their tracks. Siddhartha handed over his access card, but the service dog made him nervous. The card went through the scanner, but the dog was still sniffing. New York was a cold city; it was winter, and Siddhartha was sweating under his clothes. He checked for an out. Men could miss that smell, but a dog would not. It sensed the anxiety. Siddhartha was only getting more nervous, and the guards took a note.

It was time for Plan B. He felt a hand on his shoulder.

‘Is this Hotel Richland?’

The guard approached her with mild chivalry. ‘Yes, ma’am.’

Sonia moved in from the left with Cool Water fumes emanating from her fingers. The fumes diminished the dog’s sense of smell, and in a few seconds, it snugged back to its master. ‘I have a breakfast reservation.’

The guard checked her papers. ‘This way please.’ The fumes did the trick for Siddhartha, and the sentry escorted Sonia to the restaurant after due checking.

In the next few minutes, one by one the MARCOS followed in with Cool Water fumes emanating from their suits. They changed in the washroom where the Sri Lankans had planted the hotel attire and rendezvoused on the second floor. Rajeev was put up here. The room service would arrive anytime now.

‘There she is,’ Sonia said with assertion.

‘Hi, I was looking for you, Jessica.’ A quick glance was enough to see her identity on the nameplate on her chest. ‘Lobby manager has requested for a courier to be picked up from reception for room two ten.’ Her self-assurance carried the tone only a senior would have.

Jessica looked surprised at the sight of a stranger. ‘Sorry. I was actually off to two-oh-one to deliver this suit.’

Siddhartha entered.

‘Lui, can you take that?’ Sonia asked, eyeing Siddhartha dressed as a bell boy.

‘Yes, off course.’ Siddhartha acted familiar with Sonia.

‘But have I seen you around?’ Jessica was unsure and slightly irritated.

‘Oh, I’m the new floor manager.’ Sonia’s authoritative tone did not cut it. Her demeanor had turned Jessica off.

‘She joined yesterday,’ Siddhartha added. His eyes shared Jessica’s befuddlement at this new lady.
