Chapter Fourteen

“How bad is it?” Jerad looped the end of the silk tie and tugged downward, adjusting the knot as he moved his head from side to side. Not as clean as his bowline knot but he was working with his own head and not a headsail. He’d rather be dressing for a day in his sailboat than a funeral too.

Tom snorted at the other end of the line. “Let me put it this way. If Soren has someone on the inside helping him in the FDA and Senator Teague in his pocket, we’ve run out of road.”

“Teague? I thought he opposed Soren’s superseed.”

“He did, but he seems to have changed his mind.

“Not on his own, I’m sure.” Jerad yanked the tie loose and pulled it free. Should’ve had the sales clerk make the knot for him so he could just slip it over his head. He never could tie the ridiculous things right and hated the prefabbed ones even more. “I’m guessing Soren Umberger is now a contributor to the senator’s campaign fund.”

“Teague will have to convince the private farmers backing him that he hasn’t betrayed them.”

“I know. I’m waiting to see the backlash. It may not be much. The superseed’s getting a lot of good PR at the moment and the press conference is still two days away. Umberger’s really setting the stage for his big announcement.”

“Not for long. With the seed and soil samples you sent, we can prove the superseed design is a bust.”

Jerad still had his doubts. The samples were the only proof they had to prove UBB had crossed the line. Otherwise, the whole disaster would get buried with no one knowing the danger Soren’s superseed really posed. The man’s reach had grown further than Jerad realized.

“I don’t know if we’ll get the results in time, but you can still nail him after his big day. You know that means you’ll be in the spotlight as much as Umberger.”

A low growl sat in the base of his throat. Jerad didn’t care for the idea, but he liked the thought of Soren’s superseed—correction, super-death-seed—being touted as the salvation of mankind even less.

“Fine. Then I’ll live with it. We can call our own press conference. Umberger has to be stopped before he causes any more damage.”

“I agree, but until we get the test results back, we have no concrete evidence.”

“What about the revised report he sent to the FDA? Any way we can get a look at it?” Jerad slung the tie behind his neck and slid the ends up-and-down until it settled against his upturned collar. If it weren’t for Gabriel’s funeral, he’d toss the thing and be done with it.

Tom let loose one of his well-known snickers. “Umberger’s design is so out there, most scientists need him to interpret it. We could try, but I don’t think it’ll help.”

“I guess, but it seems fishy that he sent revised data.”

“You think he found a fix?”

“I don’t know. Maybe, but even if he did, he still has to answer for what happened in India.
