Paz had been opening his mouth to shout the words, “Your time is up!” when he heard the scream come from somewhere behind the barn. The yell that followed it was a voice he recognized. He also recognized the boom of that same man’s Colt Python. He took out his phone and called the man in question. There was no answer. Maybe the Python was used against the man who owned it. When Paz sent out a group text asking his people if they knew what was going on, only nine of them responded, not counting the two men who had remained at his side.

Paz cursed and spoke loud enough to be heard inside the barn. “If any more of my men get hurt I’ll make sure you suffer a slow death.”

He waited for an answer. It came in the form of a man hurtling through the air from the tree line. The limp body hit the ground with a thud, stirring up a cloud of dust. The man landed over a dozen feet from the trees. Paz wondered who—or what—the hell he was dealing with. A closer look at the body revealed that the neck was broken, with the head nearly facing the other way.
