Chapter 25 – Change of Plans

“Well I’m sure that’s not nefarious at all,” Lindsey said.

Liwei spoke into his headset before turning to the others. “Just hang on. We don’t want to arouse suspicion in case there’s a legitimate concern.”

Ethan glanced out the window on the right side of the aircraft just in time to see three pairs of headlights turn a corner and face the plane. “Yeah, I don’t think it’s legit.”

“Great,” Liwei said. “Ethan, there’s a hidden compartment under your feet. Now would be a good time to open that.”

Ethan bent down and pressed his hand against the floor, groping about for something that felt like a door. He peeled up a thin layer of carpet and saw a small, metal handle. He opened it and found a short-barreled Kalashnikov rifle, with five loaded magazines.

“Nice,” he whispered. Ethan pulled the rifle out, slapped one of the magazines into it, then chambered a round.

“Why does Ethan get the fun toys?” Frankie asked.

“Trust me, that’s not the fun toy,” Liwei said with a devilish grin. “This is the fun toy.”

Liwei flipped another switch and two long slits on the nose of the plane opened up, revealing the dark barrels of two M1919 machine guns.

Frankie smiled and nodded. “Now that’s nice.”

“They’re coming,” Mei said, nodding towards the three pairs of headlights approaching the runway.

“All right, everyone but Ethan strap yourselves in,” Liwei said as he flipped some more switches. “Ethan, I’m sure you know what to do.”

The plane began moving again as Liwei spoke into his headset, feigning ignorance of what the tower had been telling him before. The headlights approached quickly now, and one more pair appeared at the end of the runway, facing the plane.

Ethan unlocked the door next to him but didn’t open it yet. Don’t shoot first, he told himself. He was 99% sure who was driving those vehicles, but just in case he was wrong, he didn’t want to unload a storm of bullets on innocent people.

Fortunately, any such fears were dispelled immediately as figures appeared out of the passenger side of the vehicles, all clutching rifles. Ethan swung the door open and brought the rifle up to his shoulder.

Gunfire lit up the tarmac. The three vehicles swerved as Ethan aimed not at the gunmen but the drivers. Liwei set his hand on what looked like a joystick next to him and cut loose two long bursts from the plane’s machine guns. The vehicle facing them on the runway lurched to the left as it took the hail of bullets and smashed into a concrete barrier.

“Hold ‘em off, Ethan!” Liwei yelled, the plane picking up speed.

The three vehicles chasing them tried to move to the plane’s left side to escape Ethan’s accurate fire. “Grab my buckle!” Ethan said to Frankie.

Frankie clamped a hand over the matte steel buckle of Ethan’s riggers belt. “I got you!”

Ethan turned around and stood with his toes barely clinging to the lip of the door. He had to raise the rifle above his head, but he could now fire over the back of the airplane at the vehicles pursuing them.
