However, all the planning may not prevent problems from occurring. For example, an interviewee explained that during a project on which she worked she realised that there was no way to match individual pre- and post-test quizzes that were being carried out. The quizzes were being undertaken for research and evaluation purposes within training packages that had been designed and trialed, and were about to be rolled out to a large number of participants. She explained:And it occurred to me that the data collection tool that we were using to evaluate the success or to evaluate the training that happened in stage two was adequate for what its purpose was, but wasn’t maximising in any way what we thought we could get from it. And it occurred to me that we couldn’t match the pre-training quiz with a person’s post-training quiz. Which is fine if all you’re interested in is looking at changes overall with certain cohort groups, but not at all good when we’re trying to look at fine differences. And we didn’t know at that point where we were heading with that. So I think the design, from the outset, was naïve. If we were to go back in time, we would have really thought more thoroughly about that. And we had the opportunity to do that in stage three of the project and we embraced that. I think that was about learning from, not failure, but not from success either. So then I think once we did that, it opened opportunities, and all that was about was maximising opportunity.
