Chapter 26

At first, following Alex’s white car is boring. The tiredness weighs heavy on my eyelids and I try my best not to appear vulnerable to Kit. I’m still pointing my knife in his general direction, but my wrist is loose and if he tries, he can probably disarm me. His concentrated face as he drives makes me think he won’t try anything.

“Can I have my phone back?” he asks after a long stretch of silent driving on a straight road.

“No.” I yawn through my response. “Are car chases usually this dull?”

He casts me a disgusted look. “This is not a car chase. We’re just driving after a car. Who is in there, anyway?”

“Alexander Warrick. Know him?” I perk up a little, happy to have something to talk about.

“I guess? He’s the local celebrity billionaire, together with his father. Why are we following him?”

“Why not?” I shrug.

Kit looks at his rear-view mirror, then at me. “I would straighten if I were you. We’ve got company.”

I don’t like him telling me what to do, but when I look in my rear-view mirror, I see a familiar red car cutting the distance between us. In seconds it passes us and stops a little way ahead of us, forcing Kit to step on the brakes.

The belt digs into my collarbone as I’m propelled forward, and my breath stutters with the abrupt stop. The knife catches on the car’s interior as it slides from my hand, and I curse the red car openly.

When I look up, Kit is holding the knife toward me, looking only half as dazed as I feel. I cast a quick glance at the road, following Alex’s disappearing stop lights with my eyes.

“Give me all my stuff back,” Kit says with a voice that doesn’t tremble anymore.

I smile at him. “Do you even know how to use this?”

The question takes him aback and I take the chance to use a practiced move and disarm him by twisting his wrist. He yelps and pulls away. I put the blade away and slot my switchblade back in my pocket.

“Wasn’t this the Masked Driver’s car?” I ask while he finds his composure.

He looks up at the road and shakes his head. “It is. And I’m not driving until that car is out of the road. These race cars are built for crashing into each other. This is just a practical Tesla.”
