No one said anything for a long moment. Eve thought of how the boy had kept her and her family to feed them to Malachi. Still, he’d never been cruel otherwise. He had always brought them grain and grapes and cheese.

“I love the boy,” whispered Effy.

Eve was surprised. She had not thought that Effy loved anything. For the first time, she thought of how much bravery it had taken for Effy to come and speak to Malachi.

At that moment, Athena bounded around the side of the house—the front-facing side, where they’d not yet been. “Eve! Malachi! There’s a kitten! A live kitten in the garage! It’s in a box, but we could get it out!”

They all looked at each other. Then they ran and slithered after Athena.
