1 Reflect on your own experiences of music in your everyday life. What role(s) does it have? Where and how do you engage with music?
2 Consider your responses to the questions above. What similarities might there be to the role of music in your pupilsâ lives?
3 Devise a questionnaire to explore pupilsâ understanding of their own musical experiences both in school and beyond, and how they view these in the contexts of listening, composing and performing. Are these distinctions clear to them? Discuss the questionnaire and responses with a group of children you teach.
4 Compare the pupil feedback to your own responses to points 1 and 2. What are the similarities and differences between your and the childrenâs perceptions of musical engagement? How might you draw on these in your teaching?
