Chapter Fourteen

COLTON

I’ve never felt so nervous about a woman coming over. Not that I’ve cooked for many, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. After I fed the horses this morning, I stuck around and cleaned the stalls, then drove to town and bought the groceries for dinner tonight. By the time I made it home, my eyes were so tired I could barely keep them open, but somehow, I found the strength to take a shower before I crawled in bed for a quick nap.

Eventually, my alarm wakes me up, but I feel as though I could sleep until tomorrow. Then I remember my plans for the night, so I get up. I quickly pick up my dirty clothes off the floor, then light a few candles so it doesn’t smell like a bachelor pad—or a barn. After that, I head to the kitchen and start dinner before I pick Presley up at the B&B.

What Presley doesn’t know is I could essentially outcook anyone within a five-mile radius—well except for Mama Bishop. I pull out the homemade tomato sauce I keep in the fridge because the jar stuff doesn’t begin to compare to my recipe. A smile touches my lips thinking about it. All the guys know I’m a pro in the kitchen, and I even helped Jackson cook for Kiera the first time. Mainly because I was scared she’d be forced to eat a burnt microwaveable pizza or, even worse, the box.

As I stand here prepping, I’ll never forget how worried he was in almost the same position as I am now. Except Jackson has known Kiera since they were kids, and I’ve known Presley for a week. I have so many questions about her past and her future plans, and I want to know it all. Being alone with her last night was everything—more than I could’ve asked for—and I didn’t want it to end. I haven’t felt those feelings for someone in over five years, and it both excites and scares me.

I pour the sauce in a large pot, add fresh minced garlic for taste, then let it simmer while I set the table with a stark white cloth and candles. Taking a step back, I rub my hand over the scruff on my chin, wondering if it’s too much. I’ve thought of everything, so hopefully, she’ll be impressed.

Once the sauce is simmering, I turn the burner on low, then go to my room to find something date-worthy to wear. Instead of going for my typical plaid button-up, boots, and worn jeans, I choose slacks with a navy button-up shirt rolled to my elbows. I even wear my nice church shoes for the special occasion. As I study myself in the mirror, nothing I’m wearing says “saddle up,” which will probably surprise her. Tonight, the cowboy suit is staying in the closet. I want to show her there’s another side to me too.

I go back to the kitchen, rewash my hands, then chop and brown the chicken.
