Drew

I step into the terminal of the airport, holding back as Alexis runs to greet her parents. My eyes meet up with my dad and mom, and they are smiling. I go to them, wrapping my arms around them. “Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad.” When I step back, I can see the tears in my mom’s eyes. “Mom, don’t cry,” I plead, shaking my head and laughing.

“I’m just so happy to see you,” she says.

“Hello, Drew.” I turn around and my jaw drops open. “How have you been?”

“Ashley?” I stand staring at my ex-girlfriend. She is the last person that I was expecting to see. I move toward her and wrap my arms around her, pulling her into a hug. “I’ve been good. How about you?” I ask, stepping back.

She nods. “Not bad…not bad. You look good, Drew.”

I give her a once-over and reluctantly have to agree that she looks amazing herself. “You look good, too.” I look around to find everyone staring at us. “I didn’t realize you guys were going on this trip,” I admit, glancing back to her. They use to go when we dated, but once we broke up, they all seemed to know that it was best not to continue the excursion with us.

“Are you upset?” she asks, as we head to the baggage claim area.

I turn to her and smile, shaking my head. “Not in the least.” Alexis and I get our luggage, and we all go outside to find a cab that will take us to the loading docks.

We have to take three cabs, and I don’t know exactly how we are sandwiched together in one, but it is Alexis, me, and Ashley.

“So, Alexis, how have you been?” Ashley is asking her.

Alexis is quiet at first, a couple of times throwing me a pained look. Then she shrugs. “Doing well,” is the simple answer she gives.

“Have a boyfriend?” Ashley asks, with intrigue.

Alexis nods. “His name is Max.” Her eyes light up just mentioning his name.

“Awesome,” she answers with a smile. Turning to me, she raises her eyebrows, “How about you, Drew?”

It is clear what she means, but for some reason I am holding back from telling her about Chloe. “Nope, no boyfriend here.”

She laughs, slapping me on the leg. “You know what I mean. Do you have a girlfriend?” I see Alexis staring at me, from the corner of my eye. “I am seeing someone,” I slowly mention. I can’t read her expression, but there is definitely something there. “How about you, Ashley? Do you have a boyfriend?”

Her eyes glaze over. “I did have one, but we broke up about a month ago.”

“Oh…I’m sorry.”

She shrugs. “It wasn’t meant to be.”

The cab driver turns into the dock area and pulls us off to the side. We file out of the cab, one by one, and I remove the luggage from the trunk. I give the driver some money, and he drives away. Ashley grabs her luggage and begins to head toward where her parents are and I feel Alexis’ hand holding me back.
