Pi pushed her face into Maisieâs hand eagerly, and thenâswipe!âsliminess as the dinosaurâs tongue licked Maisieâs fingers. There was nectarine-scented dino drool everywhere.
âUmâ¦thank you?â Maisie said, trying not to make a face or to dunk her hand in the water immediately to wash it off. She continued to run her hand along Piâs nose, looking over her shoulder to see that Zak had finally left the trail and was on the bank with Bryn. Hannah had sat down next to Tri, who seemed content to lie by the shore and lap up the water, rather than jump in it like Pi had.
âSheâs kind of sleepy, isnât she?â Maisie asked Hannah.
âA girl after my own heart,â Hannah joked, patting the dinosaurâs frill as she leaned against Triâs side. She pulled a worn paperback book from her back pocket and began to read.
âZak, donât you want to come in the water?â Violet asked.
âI donât have my suit,â Zak said. âIâll keep Bryn company.â
âIâm on team not getting crushed by a dinosaur,â Hannah added. âPiâs like my pesky two-year-old sister in the bathtub.â
Maisie giggled. That did describe Piâs behavior. The dinosaur had finally pulled away from her and begun to wade toward the waterfall. She stuck her head beneath it in a dinosaur version of a shower and shook her entire body, her tail wiggling in the water like a snake.
This was Maisieâs chance: she wanted to get a better look at Piâs tail. It didnât seem to bother the dinosaur, but the crook in it made her wonder if it had been broken at some point.
âHey, will you help me?â she asked Violet. âI want to look at Piâs tail.â
âSure,â Violet said.
Together, the girls waded deeper into the pool toward the waterfall, where Pi was having the time of her life. She was even munching on some plants that sprouted from the rocks.
âSo do we grab it?â Violet asked.
Maisie frowned. âI think if we get on either side of her tail, we can kind of trap it?â
Violet nodded in understanding. âIâll get on this side.â She positioned herself behind Piâs twitching tail while Maisie stood in front of it.
Pi was still snacking on the plants, so Maisie walked forward until she was waist-deep in the pool. Piâs tail swung back and forth underwater as she ate. Maisie plunged her hands into the water, her skin prickling at the cold and then at the rough texture as her fingers made contact with Piâs tail.
It stopped twitching as soon as Maisie touched it. The dinosaur looked over her shoulder at the girl, as if she expected her to pull it like a naughty toddler would do with a cat.
âItâs okay, Pi,â Maisie told her. âI just wanted to make sure youâre not hurt.â She ran her hand farther up, feeling the bump that was the crook in Piâs tail. There wasnât even a scar. Whatever had happened to Piâs tail had happened long agoâprobably before she was even taken off Isla Nublar.
âThere you go,â Maisie said, pulling her hands away.
