Chapter Eleven

Gloria’s newly acquired wardrobe astonished her. Juliet’s parents must have thought there would be the same sort of parties here as in Winsett’s version of society. One trunk included several lovely evening dresses. Most of the clothes were more practical, although of exceptionally fine fabrics and designs. The latest in riding habits with split skirts, a variety of everyday dresses, ensembles suitable for church and shopping in town, and a myriad of trimmings, unmentionables, and jewelry.

Gloria held up one dress and twirled around with it pressed to her. She’d won a treasure chest. She grinned to herself. Two treasure chests shaped like trunks, each filled with better clothes than she’d ever seen firsthand.

Perhaps she should have taken Dwight’s suggestion and rested. Her discoveries excited her too much to allow sleep. After inspecting each dress, she hung as many in the armoire as room permitted. She returned most to the trunks. Otherwise, she’d require two more armoires to hold them.

She’d put the unmentionables in the empty drawers of the chest. Sensing a blush, she thought of the frilly nightgown she’d tucked away. At least there was a robe to protect her modesty when she wasn’t under the covers. Oh, my, the approach of the evening under the covers created more blushes.

Recalling the small selection of clothes she’d left at her uncle’s home, she reveled in her new status. Finally she was part of a wonderful family, with a new son—no two new sons—and plenty of everything. She sent up a prayer that Juliet and Bruce were happily wed and that their lives and hers would result in happiness.

Refusing to look back any longer, she didn’t want God to think she was like Lot’s wife. Certainly, she would not miss her past life. Gloria’s only worry now was what Dwight and his parents would do when they learned her true identity. Being an impostor came with ready-made problems.

She scooted the trunks to the foot of the bed and stood back to examine the effect. They looked good there, both trunks being new and of good quality. With a happy smile on her face, she went downstairs to join her new family.

Conversation’s hum drew her to the kitchen.

Grandma sat facing her. “Come in, dear. Would you like another bowl of cobbler? I made extra.”

“I’d love one. Peach is one of my favorites.”

Boots dished up a bowl then set it in front of her. “Eat fast ’fore your husband eats every bite. He’s always hungry.”

“With such good food, it’s no wonder. What will I be doing to help you, Boots? I enjoy cooking.” Oh, she had forgotten Juliet probably didn’t know how to cook.

“Didn’t figure you’d know how, but I sure welcome your help. I get a lot of complaints about the lack of variety. I never claimed to be no fancy chef.”

Grandma shook her head. “Don’t let him fool you. He fixes good, nutritious meals that keep the men strong. They work hard and need fuel to keep them going. I help a bit with desserts and an occasional meal.
