âYou wanna do what?â Caleb looked at Cassie like sheâd gone insane.
Cassie looked about where they sat on the lawn of the Samuelsâ ranch. Sheâd ridden out after sheâd been done for the day, hoping to catch him there. Luck had been with her.
âShh. Keep your voice down,â she said. âYou heard me.â
âOk, Virginia, I knew you were crazy, but not this crazy.â
âStop calling me that. Why is it so crazy?â
Caleb looked at her. âYou wouldnât even think about marrying me as a prize for a bet, but all of sudden, you want to get married to make a home for Dom?â
âWell, getting married to take care of a child is a much better reason than a bet, Montana,â she said.
Caleb smiled. âIs that gonna be your pet name for me?â
âNo. Donât get off the subject. What is so wrong about doing that?â Cassie said.
âAre you sure this isnât just because of what I said to you a few nights ago?â He leaned over closer and whispered, âAre you lusting after me?â
She gasped and shoved him roughly, and he fell over. Caleb just laughed and stayed put. âIâm so tired, I think Iâll sleep right here tonight.â
âGet back up here,â Cassie insisted and pulled on his arm, to no avail. She narrowed her eyes and did something she thought sheâd never do; she pinched his rear end.
Caleb yelped and sat up so fast, they almost knocked heads. âDonât do that again,â he said.
âThen stop playing around, Caleb. This is serious,â Cassie said, as she looked into his eyes in the growing twilight.
âNo, this is insane. Iâm not gonna marry you for that reason, or for any other right now. I donât have a home, in case you havenât noticed,â he said.
âBut it will be done soon and it wonât take us long to make arrangements to be married,â Cassie said. âBesides, you were the one who admitted to lusting after me, remember?â
He groaned. âHow can I forget? Youâre never gonna let me live that down, are you?â
She gave him a flirtatious look and said, âNo, especially when itâs not one-sided.â
Caleb got a lopsided grin on his face as he said, âReally? Youâre not just tryinâ to get your own way?â
âMaybe a little bit, but I do mean it,â Cassie said.
Caleb gave her a doubtful look.
âI do,â she insisted.
âEven so, what if we get married and his uncle wants to take him? Then what? Iâm warninâ you, Cassie, once I get married, thatâs it. There wonât be any divorce and the marriage will be consummated for sure, so an annulment will be out of the question. Iâm not that kind of man.â
âIâve thought about that, too. Weâll wait to go through with everything until we know what Domâs uncle is going to do. If he wants him, then we can revisit the issue and decide what we want to do,â Cassie said.
Caleb frowned at her for several moments and then got up and walked away from her. She rose and followed him, dusting off her skirt as she went.
