Medicine: Holly leaves were dried and made into healing teas. Hot compresses made of holly leaves helped cure broken bones. Holly is not used much these days in alternative medicine. Holly’s properties are triterpenes beta amyrin, flavonoids, rutin, quercetin nitrile, glycosides, ilicin, phytosterols, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and traces of theobromine (in the leaves) (The Herbal Resource 2021).

Caution: The berries of the holly tree are poisonous to humans and animals. Do not consume.

Practical Uses: Holly makes a hot fire. The wood is white and retains its resin. Dry well before working with it or staining. If sanded with fine-grit paper, the wood will develop a high luster. Holly makes a wonderful wand in glistening white and is a stunning walking stick.

Conservation: Several holly species are endangered. One holly, Ilex gardneriana, is extinct because of habitat loss. It is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills of India.

Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)
