Chapter Thirteen
The price of freedom
I'm up before the sun, exhausted and aching, but unable to sleep any longer. I keep having dreams. I take my time washing up and getting dressed, choosing carefully from the wardrobe before I slip into a long- sleeved shirt of midnight blue sewn with silver thread and embroidered with elaborate knot-work around the neck and down the sleeves. It's far nicer than the simple shirts and tunics I've chosen so far, as are the dusty gray suede pants that wrap snugly around my long legs and firm butt. I'm probably just asking for Sactaren to bend me over a table, and I almost change into something not quite so tight, but I want to make a good impression, the right impression, and ... well, maybe this is it.
I'm not saying I want him to fuck me, but after what Schaff said - not that I believe a word of it - I am a little curious. Love? That I find hard to believe. He is a Lord, I am a slave love is not in our stars. I throw on my cloak and slip outside to watch the last of the bright stars fade into the antique silver glow of pre-dawn. Owls glide on silent wings over my head, heading back to their nests in the old trees of the Rynnawood, and I wrap my arms tightly about myself. Khas. I wish I knew if he was okay, out there all alone. I wish I could see him just one last time, just to tell him I was sorry. I sigh and head back into the castle, returning my cloak to my room before making my way toward the kitchen for a little long overdue breakfast. I don't think I ate anything at all yesterday. I cut a slice of bread, somehow still warm inside, though the oven is stone cold, and a piece of white cheese full of almond slivers. A meal fit for a king.
I wander toward the shop, in no hurry, and find myself stopping outside the door to that other world, Daron. An entire other planet, just beyond that door. Amazing. I glance up and down the hall, but it's empty. It couldn't hurt to take a look, right? I reach for the door latch, then jerk my hand back as it turns on its own. The door opens, sweet morning birdsong, the heady scent of earth and flowers, and the warm, golden light of day pouring forth into the cold, shadowy corridor. The bite of breakfast in my mouth turns dry and gummy as Sactaren steps out of the sunlight, blinking hard in the sudden darkness.
He's shirtless and barefoot, in a pair of stained and patched pants. Over one arm is a basket full of herbs and flowers, with a small pile of bright, ripe wild strawberries nestled among the sprigs of lavender and the lacy fronds of maidenhair fern. Still blinking sightlessly in the dim light, he turns up the hall toward his tower and I scramble back to avoid him.
