When she couldn’t take anymore, when the sensation became too much, she pushed at his head. Matteo swiftly moved his head away, but he didn’t leave the position he was in. She floated in some peaceful place where nothing existed but him and her.

She could feel his hot skin against hers, could feel the slight sheen of sweat on her skin. She heard the sound of his harsh breathing and knew he was just as excited as she was. Their breath slowed together, and when she could open her eyes again, she looked down.

“It’s not over, is it?” She knew the question revealed the truth to him when she saw his left eyebrow arch a little. She was a virgin, but she’d never said as much to him. Not until now, when her stupid question gave it away. He looked pleased, though, so she didn’t look away.

“It is for tonight, Marie. There’s no need to rush anything.” He moved her legs off of his shoulders and came up to rest on the pillow beside hers. “You’re different, do you understand? You’re sweet and kind, and so in need of love. You deserve to enjoy every moment that we have together, Marie, and I’m going to make sure of that.”

She felt torn now. That one phrase, so in need of love, had stung a little, but the rest? The rest was more than she knew she could hope for. She saw relationships come and go in this town, sometimes in a matter of days. People didn’t seem to want anything more than a moment of pleasure now before they went back to their cell phone or laptop. She needed to be loved, she knew that, and he’d said she deserved it. In the end, glee won out, and she smiled at him, happier than she’d ever been in her life. Even the moment when she opened the letter that said she’d been accepted to LSU hadn’t been this good.

“Thank you, Matteo.” She put her hand against his cheek and wished her nails were manicured, but then she saw his eyes and forgot to care. They were kind eyes, eyes of a man that would give her the world if he could. Did he love her?

It didn’t really matter to her right now. Love was something she didn’t know how to define anyway, not with her upbringing. She knew it was supposed to be something about undying devotion and lots of sex, and having babies, but what were the real emotions involved? She had no idea, and the maelstrom of emotions inside of her right now didn’t help.

“Get some rest, Marie, and just relax, baby. That’s all you have to do.” He tucked her under his arm, with her head against his chest. She listened to the sound of his heart, the whisper of every breath he took, and before she knew it, she was asleep.

Her dreams were filled with him, with the things she wanted to explore with him. They were fantasies of possibilities, and her mind drew solely on instinct to flesh the scenes out.
