Chapter five

Avoiding Suspicions

They ate and drank until the first panel ended and then a stream of people flooded the Witches’ Gallery. This time, however, Liane and Meray had worked out a schedule for when they wanted to cast spells, alternating so they didn’t recreate the original hex, or even worse, create something stronger and more destructive.

The good thing about this, thought Meray, watching Liane talk about the myths of solar witches, was the opportunity to observe her.

One interesting fact the lunar witch was picking up on was that she was clearly interested in her magic, and bubbling over to talk with other magic users about it, but she was also, possibly, a little self-conscious. Or maybe it was nerves? Every few seconds she would fiddle with her hair, or after a longer period of time, she would wipe her hands downward on her skirt, as if the material was sweat absorbing.

After the group she’d been talking to walked away, xe decided this would be a good time to ask

“Are you nervous, getting up and talking in front of people?” Xe nodded at the group halfway down the hallway.

“Sometimes. I know I can be a bit of a klutz, so I worry about giving the wrong impression.” She glanced down the hallway, then looked back at xem. “I mean, if people are laughing at me because I did something silly, or stupid, then they’re not going to pay attention when I give them information.”

“It’s a possibility.” Something xe hadn’t thought about either.

I really hope you don’t discover what I’ve done. . . I mean, you’re going to know it happened anyhow, but I hope you don’t realize I’m the one behind it. If you do, I think you’re going to be furious with me, and I’m just doing this because I want to know you’re okay. . . and that you weren’t lying when you said you got everything for me.

Shit. The thoughts were back, and this was the first time they’d given xem information from the same person. It could be the fact that out of all the people xe’d heard, Liane was the only one xe’d been around more than once. Bobby, Grady, and Jaylen had all been in the Cafe while the conference witch and warlock healer from earlier where. . . well, somewhere around here.

Xe took a deep breath, promised xemself xe’d deal with it later on, then gave Liane a sharp look. Better to deal with each problem as it happened; maybe that way some progress could happen.

Her smile changed into a confused frown. “What did I do? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I get the feeling,” Meray said carefully, choosing xyr tone and words with care. Xe didn’t want to hurt her, or think xe was upset, “you’re hiding something from me. Something important.”

She didn’t crack, so xe leaned in and whispered.

“Something you think I’m going to be mad about.”

Her eyes widened, but Liane covered her mouth and shook her head.

“Just tell me what it is,” xe said, grabbing one of her hands and squeezing it.
