âAll I can think about is those dumplings your mom made,â I say to Abigail.
âItâs been three days since youâve had them.â
âI know, but do you think sheâll make them again for us?â
âShe adores you, so I think sheâll make them for you.â I smile. âMaria is coming soon. Are you ready for your lesson?â I nod my head enthusiastically. Iâve been looking forward to todayâs lesson, because Maria and I have been talking about what I need to do in order to see the world. Elise has been very supportive too. But Abigail has become a bit withdrawn. I think that there are things happening that she canât tell me about.
I have a feeling itâs got to do with Godâs Haven. âAre you okay?â I ask as I gather my books and head into the family room with Abigail.
âYeah, of course.â She puts on a fake higher-pitched voice.
âAbigail, I know somethingâs happening, but youâre not telling me what. Do I have to leave here? Am I getting in your way?â
âNo! I love having you here.â Her shoulders slump.
âBut?â I try and push her to tell me whatâs bothering her.
âNothing, Iâve just got a lot on my mind.â She smiles, but the happiness doesnât reach her eyes. Sheâs not ready to tell me what she needs to just yet, and I need to respect that. Because if anything, Abigail has shown me patience, compassion, and respect.
âWill you tell me if itâs got something to do with me?â
âAbsolutely. Iâve been thinking, when youâve finished your lesson, we can go to the beach.â
âThe beach?â I shriek almost in too high a tone. âWith water and sand?â
âItâll take about an hour and a half to get there, and itâs cool today so you canât go swimming. Actually,â she pauses and tilts her head. âYou wouldnât know how to swim, would you?â
âIn Godâs Haven, we had bath tubs weâd have to share when we were young, then we had showers. We werenât allowed in the tubs after we reached a certain age. I donât know the age, because they never told us how old we were.â
âThatâs got to be hard, not knowing how old you are.â
âThe hardest part for me was when I tried to learn and theyâd beat me.â
Weâre interrupted by a knocking at the door. Instantly my mood changes. It was heavy for a moment as I recalled painful memories from Godâs Haven. But, now I have a whole new future to look forward to. A future where Iâm in control, and I can do whatever I want.
Abigail opens the door, and Maria enters. âHi, Luna, Abigail,â she says with a wide smile. âReady to learn?â Maria is always happy. She brings a lightness with her whenever she enters the flat. Itâs quite infectious. I like it. I like her.
âAm I ever!â I feel like jumping out of my skin. Iâm super eager and I canât wait for whatever todayâs lesson is about.
âLuna, I need to go to work, will you be okay here?â
Abigail has left me on my own two times now.
