Twenty-Eight

“So tell me about her,” Luna says a little while later as she sits cross-legged on the kitchen bench, making us a sandwich from the spread Theodore somehow knew to have ready for us when we snuck out of my bedroom an hour later, looking for a snack.

“Um, what’s there to tell? She’s makes Lucifer look like Barney the dinosaur.”

“In what way?” she asks as she holds up a slice of prosciutto to the light. She considers it for a moment, pops it into her mouth, and picks up another piece to lay on top of the piece of ciabatta I sliced for her.

“In what way? In every way. Looks and personality. You saw her.”

“She is beautiful, stunning.” She picks up a slice of mozzarella and lays it on top of the deli meats. “Some of this?” she asks, holding up the little jar of homemade pesto.

I nod. “A little, sure. Well, she has plenty of time and money to spend on her appearance since none of it is spent on her character.”

She hisses through her teeth. “Wow, that’s harsh.”

“You know it’s the truth.”

She jumps down from the kitchen bench and starts opening drawers. “I believe you. I’m just saying… I can’t ever imagine what it would take for me to talk about someone the same way. Especially my own mother.”

I wander over, moving in behind her, and open a high cupboard. I grab her by the waist and lift her up so she can see into it. She leans over and peers inside, pulling out the container of toothpicks.

“Got it! How did you know that’s what I was looking for?” she asks when I lower her to the ground.

I drop a kiss onto her bare shoulder. “I know you, Luna.”

She tips her head to the side and lets me nibble up her neck. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“Then tell me, what am I thinking right now?”

I reach around her, crushing her to me, grinding gently with my hips.

She laughs. “Close.”

She wriggles her ass against me, and heat travels like a missile throughout my body. And for a moment, I consider lifting my T-shirt that she’s wearing and taking her right here again.

I can’t get enough of her.

Instead, I let her go and walk over to the fridge to pull out a bottle of apple cider, then two glasses from the cupboard.

“Our mother never thought of us as anything but means or obstacles to her end. The end being rich old men who were blinded by her charm.”

“That’s terrible.”

“That’s why we all have drinking problems,” I say dryly.

“Do you really?” She laughs.

“Eh, let’s say we’re emotional drinkers rather than eaters. I’ve seen my brothers try to find comfort at the bottom of a bottle when they’ve had trouble, especially with the women in their lives. But that’s never really been something I’ve had to worry about.” I down my cider, the tart sweetness washing away the bitterness. “But enough about her. Tell me more about your mother.”

“She was… different,” Luna says, slicing the knife through the sandwich, wrapping it in a napkin, and handing one half to me.
