After breakfast, Sarah went to the bathroom in the barracks house and as she headed toward the exit, Mary entered. In one arm, she carried a black and red flannel. She extended a hand, gesturing for Sarah to go into room number four.

Sarah stopped at the doorway.

Mary extended a folded flannel shirt and a pair of canvas gloves.

“What’s this?”

“Your work clothes,” Mary said, stepping forward to force Sarah into room number four.

Sarah stepped back, but then held her stance in the doorway. “I’m sorry. I appreciate you letting me stay here, but I have to go. I’d like to get my car now.”

“Wade’s car.” Mary’s friendly demeanor diminished.

“I was heading to the women’s retreat. You have to understand. I wasn’t supposed to come here.”

“But you did.” Her words cracked like a whip on the cold air. “And everyone that comes here, comes for a reason. You were sent to atone for your sins.”

“Please,” she said, voice trembling. “I want to go.”

“Tom!” Mary blocked the door frame so Sarah couldn’t leave.

Eleanor passed by, looking up long enough to warn Sarah with a shake of her head. Her large round eyes were backlit with a sense of urgency.

A man well over six feet tall stormed down the hallway and filled the doorway.

“My dear,” Mary said. “You can leave once you pay off your debt for staying last night.”

“I have money,” Sarah said. “I can pay—”

“You have stolen money, you thief!” Mary’s sugar sweet voice dissolved into a snarl.

Tom took a step into her room. His chiseled face, scarred and deformed, scowled beneath a thick red beard.

“When your work is done, when your sins are atoned for, that’s when you leave.”

“How long does that take?”

“As long as people need.” Mary gritted her teeth and then took a deep breath. “Come, dear. You don’t want to make this difficult.”

Sarah took the flannel and gloves from Mary and closed her door behind them after they left.
