CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Isabel Reichert sat on the gallery of her house, reading the Sunday paper. It was going to be a beautiful day. The possibilities that lay before her appeared endless. From the time she made the decision to go to Mexico—the most bizarre thing she had ever done in her life—a new energy had overtaken her. And she had pulled it off. A wig, tanning makeup, some funky clothes, including a floppy hat, along with her husband’s total interest in himself and his own problems, made it easy. When people are not looking for something, they seldom see it. She followed her husband’s every step except to bed. Stood right behind them, listening to what they said, as they watched the cliff divers. A party of three.

If she had been discovered, she had the confrontation planned. Now there were more scenarios than ever. Although she had bribed the desk clerk for his name, she still didn’t know who the mysterious Mr. Ortega was, but Bill hadn’t gone to see him about a golf date. The beautiful part was that she could take her time in deciding exactly what to do. Beyond that Isabel Reichert could only think about Isabel Reichert. For all intents and purposes, she was free.

Sam awoke early, despite having been up most of the night. Karen had backed into him, he held her in the spoon position while they slept. He managed to get out of bed without waking her, dressed, and called Skeeter Crewes to help him extricate her car from the drainage ditch. Skeeter said he could help if Sam came right over and afterwards gave him a ride to the dock. He wrote Karen a note and left it next to the coffee pot, which he loaded and turned on. He didn’t take time for a cup for himself.

Good Morning! I’m not still running. You were asleep when I got back. Have gone to get your car out of the ditch. If you regain consciousness, I’ll see you when I get back.
