Zach quickly texted him back:

Please tell me you didn’t give it to her!

Gary replied:

Yes I gave it to her. Look, I’m at the hospital with Denise. She just had a healthy baby boy. I didn’t have time to go back and forth with Vanessa. You said to let you know and that’s what I did. I gotta go, but let me know if you need anything else.”

Even though he was pissed, Zach texted his cousin Gary back, thanking him for the information. For a moment, he hoped Vanessa hadn’t discovered any of his father’s secrets, but then he remembered the plan and it wouldn’t have been created if she didn’t know anything. Zach wondered if she was just as shocked as he was when he’d discovered his father’s secrets.

Three years ago, Zach had found scanned letters and pictures of his dad with men on his father’s iCloud. Zach had dropped his iPhone in some water when he was home a few years ago for Christmas break. His dad had given him an old phone he had lying around to use temporarily, but he’d forgotten to log out of the phone. That night, Zac was playing around on the phone and had mistakenly entered Grant’s iCloud—where he’d discovered his father, naked with other men in most photos or engaged in sexually-explicit activities with men in the others.

Zach had always wondered where he himself had acquired his desire for men from, and when he had discovered he was just like his father, he’d known. Many say sexuality isn’t hereditary, but how did they really know? Zach identified with the lust for a man that Grant had, and he even had a boyfriend back at school. One thing though, he knew a snake when he saw one, and Vanessa Jones was definitely the belly-crawling creature that could make life hard for his father, and at the same time, break up his family. He wasn’t going to stand by and allow that to happen.

His first thought had been to use some of his savings to pay her to leave Detroit and not show her face again, but he knew her type and he knew she was after a much bigger prize than the twenty thousand dollars he could offer her. But he wasn’t willing to see his father’s dreams and aspirations all end because of a snake in their garden. It was time for Zach to become a mongoose and eliminate this potentially-deadly cobra for good.
