Nine

The activity at the rafting center slowly began to die down after Labor Day. As vacationers went back to work and students to school, there was less and less demand for trips during the week. Weekends still proved busy, but Jo could take a day or two off midweek to do the things she wanted. And those days didn’t amount to much. The laptop became her friend. She sometimes gathered with friends she knew from church. She thought about taking up some kind of craft and even bought a card-making kit, thinking it might be nice this year to give out handmade cards for Christmas.

Jo turned on the laptop to see what was happening. Once again, Dan asked for a friend request on the social network. Ever since she’d taken him off her friends list after the escapade at Arches, he inquired if he could come back. And each time she hit the Ignore feature. Until today, when she felt in a more jovial mood and accepted. After she hit the button to access his profile page, she noticed the new picture of him making some strange face while sitting in the raft. She wondered then about his background. She still knew so little about him. Why he really left Virginia to come here. What his plans were in life. If he would ever consider putting God in the equation.

The chat box popped up. I struck oil, Dan wrote.

What do you mean you struck oil?

I mean I’ve been trying to get your attention now for weeks. Did you know I’ve closed on my house? And I’m having an open house this Friday night. Like to have you come if you can.

Jo thought about it. Like her social calendar was booked these days. I’ll have to see. You can’t have too many people coming to it. You don’t know that many in Moab.

True. Just employees from the company. Maybe I should invite our archenemies.

Jo could imagine the confrontation if Chris and Travis showed up. Thankfully, after the ice-cream encounter several weeks ago, things had been quiet. No more chain rattling.

You know better than that, she typed.

I know. I have you to straighten me out.

Jo thought on that one. She remembered that tonight was their young adult fellowship at the church. Well, why not? Hey, since you like parties so much, come on over to the gathering at my church tonight. We’re going to play board games.

What time?

8:00.

I’m there.

That was easy, Jo thought, reminding her of the commercial with the same slogan. She grimaced and closed the laptop, wondering what she had just gotten herself into. Had she opened herself up to more trouble? She thought not. This was a good group to join. Dan needed to see how Christian guys and girls interacted with each other. He could use basic lessons on what it means to have a real relationship with the Lord. Not engaging in romantic encounters at every bend in the road, but serving each other and waiting on God for Him to open the doors.
