LUCA

It’s tough to mind your own business when you’re fist-deep in everyone else’s, but somehow I manage to look busy all morning while I wait for Sloane’s meeting to finish. I walk past the door to the boardroom a couple of times, always carrying a stack of papers and pretending to send a text in the event that someone walks out, but I can’t hear a thing.

I’m sure there’s a bug in the room that I could tap into, but not from my work computer. I don’t mind breaking the law, but I won’t use local government devices to do it.

The clock is squeaking past 11 am when Sloane enters my office without knocking. She breezes through the door and slams it shut behind her, clinging to the wood like it’s a life preserver. Her cheeks are devoid of color and her beautiful blue eyes are wide with fear. “They know,” she whispers.

My heart is racing, but I play it cool. With a singular raised eyebrow and my pen poised to write, I ask, “What do they know?”

Sloane peels herself off the door and manages to find a seat in front of my desk. She plops down with all the grace of a hippo. “They knew about the blackmail, Luca. They had the photos.”

Despite being the person that put this into motion, my stomach churns a little bit. I told Saint to tip the police off about Sloane’s history with Daniel, not share her lurid pictures with the whole department. “Are you being considered a suspect?”

She shrugs her shoulders, her eyes growing wilder by the moment. “I don’t know,” Sloane says honestly. “I think so though.” As if coaching herself, she starts to breathe slower. One deep breath in, held for a few seconds, before slowly exhaling. It’s truly a joy to watch because I can see the stress melt off her face with each round she does. “They asked me about my whereabouts and whether or not they could be accounted for.”

“How does a single woman account for sleeping alone in her bed?” I muse. If the police suspected me of something, I’d have to provide three alibis just to reassure them that I’m telling the truth. No one believes the Italian guy. With good reason, I might add, but that is neither here nor there.

“I told them I was with you,” Sloane says simply.

I can’t help but smile. Technically, it’s the truth. She was with me last night for a couple of hours while we waited for Imelda and her team to clean up the crime scene and stage it at another location. But we weren’t together all night, nor were we together while Daniel was getting murdered. “What exactly did you tell the police?”

There’s a knock on my office door before she can respond and Sloane slaps a hand over her mouth to cover a squeal. I glare at her as I get up from my seat and answer. “Hello,” I greet the pair of cops standing outside.
