On Monday Charlotte beat Asher to work by a solid ten minutes. At her desk when he arrived, she let herself enjoy looking at him, her gaze following him when he strode off the elevator. Already focused on the business at hand, he never glanced her way.

Disappointed, she plunged into work, trying to convince herself it was what she wanted. This was business. No time for personal agendas. But a quick wave or smile wouldn’t have hurt.

Still, she had the weekend to look forward to. Two days with the twins and their sexy daddy.

Sexy? She stared blankly at the paper but saw only Asher’s dark hair, tousled. Saw his laughter when listening to Madison explain something, the intensity of his eyes just before she closed hers when he kissed her.

He was sexy—and off-limits. She had work to do. Heat stole into her cheeks, and she ruthlessly brushed aside her thoughts before they distracted her so she couldn’t do her job.

She didn’t see Asher the rest of the day. Curious as to how he liked the new nanny, she wished he’d at least stopped by her desk long enough to tell her about the woman.

The first thing on the day’s agenda on Tuesday was the regular staff meeting for project managers. Charlotte took her usual seat at the far end of the table from Asher. He joined the gathering at precisely nine and instantly began requesting information to bring him up to speed on various projects. When it was Charlotte’s turn, she spoke clearly and concisely. His gaze never wavered from her face while she spoke, but there was nothing in his expression to suggest he’d kissed her several times and had invited her to spend the weekend with him and his family in four days.

His treatment was professional and courteous, as with all his staff. The meeting went on a long time, since Asher had been away from the office for over a month.

Charlotte took a late lunch when the meeting ended.

The wind was brisk in the city streets, refreshing and invigorating. Charlotte loved to wander around at lunchtime when the weather permitted. San Francisco continued to charm her. Taking her deli sandwich to Union Square, she found a sheltered bench and basked in the sunshine, the cool air whipping strands from her neat French braid.

She and her team were making good strides on the World vision project. She was in the last stages of two other projects and already thinking ahead to a new idea for an old client. Her career seemed firmly established. In time she might even think of opening her own firm or going into partnership with someone.

Asher sprang to mind.

Giving in to the inevitable, she let herself dream about becoming a partner with him. They could travel together. Expand the company until theirs was one of the premier firms in international consulting in the Pacific Rim. She liked analyzing business directions and devising plans.

How much more exciting would her job be as her expertise grew?

But her thoughts didn’t stay on business opportunities.
