A half second before I finished reading, Luke stiffened. The same tension overtook him when he mentioned his father—or the place he grew up.

In class, Ms. C had mentioned that C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien used to meet at a pub to discuss books and help each other write stories. I didn’t know they’d lived in Oxford, but Luke’s reaction made Google unnecessary. I’d worry about the exact place later, though.

“Oxford it is,” I said.

The slightest grunt came from his throat.

Doubt churned in my stomach. Maybe our time together was over.

“You don’t…I mean, if you don’t want to come…I know you have a life. You’ve been away for several days. I’m sure you have stuff to do in London. The kids need someone to read to them.” I was rambling, but I didn’t want him to feel forced into going somewhere he’d rather avoid.

He blinked, wiping any real emotion from his face, and fixed me with a stern look. “You can’t abandon a quest before it’s over, Pilgrim. I’m coming. If you still want me.”

The tension drained from me, even though he was only prolonging the inevitable. “Yes, I want you. I mean, I want you to come. As long as you want to.” Stop talking, Britt.

His face softened, and his eyes were bright. “Good. That’s settled, then.”
