SEVEN

Cash wiped sweat from his brow with the back of his hand and peered through the small square window into the stairwell. One set of concrete stairs went up and one went down. Both looked clear but that didn’t mean they couldn’t be ambushed on either set.

They had three choices to exit. The killer couldn’t be in all places at one time. He glanced at Mae and she was peeping into the hall.

“Looks clear on both sides, but who knows what lies behind any of those office doors or the other stairwells,” she whispered.

The question was, had someone set this whole thing up? Who would have known they were coming here if they weren’t followed—and Cash couldn’t say with certainty that they hadn’t been tailed. Anyone at the station knew they were coming over. The killer chose to stall out the elevator, knowing how to switch breakers or control panels. Also someone had to know that the second floor was empty. Could be anyone. It was no secret to anyone in Willow Banks that Jenner Elevator was closing.

“Cash?” Mae hissed. “Give me something here.”

“There’s too many offices to clear. While the stairs are tight, we have a better chance at firing back and if we have blind spots, the killer does too.”

Mae agreed.

“Cover me.” Cash pushed open the door, keeping his back flush to the wall as he aimed his gun upward until he came to the stairs leading to ground level, then he switched aim below him as Mae kept her gun trained on the stairs above them. He caught her eye and motioned with his chin toward the next set of concrete stairs and nodded that he was going to head down them. She returned the nod.

The stairwell had great acoustics, so as quiet as they were trying to be, the sound of shoes scuffing along concrete echoed. Cash’s pulse pounded.

He kept to the wall and not the railing, inching down one step at a time.

Mae was a few feet behind him, covering his back.

One step.

Two steps.

His heart rate slowed as the door to the first floor came into view. If the killer was messing with their minds, he was doing a bang-up job.

Cash peeped through the glass. The lobby area appeared clear. “I think we’re—”

Gunfire exploded and sparks on the metal railing burst into the air. Cash’s ears rang. Mae ducked and fired back. The shots had come from the stairs above. The killer must have been on the third-floor stairs, heard them moving and crept down.

Another shot fired. Mae winced and fired another round. Oh no. “Mae, are you hit?” She was in the crosshairs and hurt. Red seeped through her pale blue dress shirt. Cash threw open the door to the lobby and he and Mae burst through.

Going back in and giving chase was too dangerous. He wouldn’t risk Mae’s life and she’d already been hit.

“I’m fine.” She breathed in sharply at the pain. Right now, there was nothing he could do for her. “There’s no way out of the building except on the first floor and there are a dozen exits at least.
