CHAPTER TWELVE

Mac and Liv left the basement and hurried down the hall just as Patsy opened the door for Doc Hathaway. According to Tempe, who had kept Liv in the loop during her time away, the retired and renowned cardiac surgeon had moved to Texas after his wife died, and everyone in the area called on him because he was the closest available doctor. He was a big believer in church and community and always helped when asked.

Liv skidded to a stop when Mac came to a sudden halt in front of her.

“Patsy, take Doc Hathaway upstairs. There’s a matter I have to see to.”

Liv couldn’t see Mac’s face, but she did note Patsy’s immediate understanding that this was a serious matter. Liv jumped when Mac bellowed up the stairs.

“Barnie! Come!”

Barnie came charging down the stairs, ears flapping the whole way as he passed Patsy and the doctor on their way up. Grabbing his coat and Stetson off a coat rack, Mac opened the door and Liv went into action, seizing him by the back of his jacket.

“Stop!”

He peered over his shoulder, and Liv took a step back at the fierceness covering his face. His square jaw was locked, his lips formed a straight line and his eyes... They were lit with the call of battle. That was the only way to describe it.

“Where are you going?” She was proud of how strong her words came out.

“I’m going hunting,” he said with a resoluteness that caused shivers to tap their way up her spine. She was seriously afraid he wasn’t referring to hunting animals after seeing the men dressed in black on the security screen.

Squaring her own jaw, she shot back, “Not without me, you’re not.”

“You’re staying here.”

It was a drill-sergeant command, and Liv had never done very well with outright orders. “You’re going after them, aren’t you? The men who breached your security. I’m coming with you.”

“No. You’re. Not,” he said through clenched teeth. “It’s too dangerous.”

Liv stood tall—well, as tall as her height would allow. “Mac, this is my battle. I’m coming whether you like it or not.” He didn’t back down, and she tried another tack. “If you leave, I’ll just follow you.”

He looked like he wanted to spit nails, but he gave her a curt nod. “Grab your jacket. We’re going on horseback. I know this ranch like the back of my hand. If they’re here, I’ll find them.”

Liv took her jacket off the coatrack and slipped it on before he could change his mind. Mac also grabbed Barnie’s K-9 vest on his way out the door. “Why do we need that?”

“It’s best to be prepared” was Mac’s curt response.

Liv was seeing a totally different man than the laid-back cowboy she’d come to know in such a short period of time. This Mac was on a mission, and nothing would stop him. What other facets of his personality did he keep hidden? Online friends with unusual capabilities. A successful financial planner. A retired Blue Angel. A cowboy.
