ELEVEN
Leah stared out the window of the floatplane Cade had secured through a bush pilot friendâa guy named Billyâto transport them. It had been two days since Snyder had broken into the house, but it had taken them that long to arrange everything. Leah was all too aware that she was running out of time.
Cade knew the people and had connections that Leah didnât. Heâd become an asset she hadnât known she would need.
When Snyder had found her, she thought sheâd made a big mistake in going to the cabin. But meeting Cade had changed her mind. Now she believed God had led her here, after all. With Cadeâs hand gripping the armrest, she wanted to reach out and lay her hand over his. Let him know how grateful she was that God had sent him.
The small plane flew over a ferry like the one Leah had taken to get here. She wished she could have taken that amazing trip without the burden of the murder sheâd witnessed. Without the fear of being tracked. As she watched the snowcapped mountains, rainforest islands and waters of the Inside Passage beneath them through the window, she wondered how sheâd let Cade talk her into letting him come along. It was one thing to stay at his house a few days, but another for him to get involved in her search for answers.
For all practical purposes, she was a fugitive.
The night Snyder had broken into the house, sheâd overheard Cadeâs conversation with his grandmother and sister when heâd told them heâd be going with her to Washington. They hadnât understood why heâd go this far to help Leah, a woman none of them knew well enough to trust. Leah wasnât sure why he was doing so much, either. At least Cade had insisted the two women stay with his aunt and uncleâhis fatherâs sisterâfor a few days. Theyâd left earlier, taking the three-day ferry to Seattle, which should put plenty of time and space between them and Snyder.
Isaiah and Adam, and even David if necessary, could handle the Mountain Cove Avalanche Center until Cade and Heidi were back.
Leah had no idea if Snyder knew they had left, or if he would guess where they were headed. He had a job to do, too, and couldnât afford to take too much time off to harass Leah. He couldnât afford to raise more suspicions. Maybe he would claim he was investigating Timâs murder. Of course, his methods were not sanctioned by any law-enforcement entity.
Regardless, there was a piece missing in the way Snyder was handling things. Why was he taking so long to make any real move against her? Why was he playing games?
In leaving Mountain Cove, she and Cade had made sure they hadnât been followed. Bottom line, sheâd never be free of Snyder, nor would she survive, if she didnât find out what was going on. Sheâd made a few discoveries that left her with theories, but she needed hard-copy files from Timâs office to go through his client list for the past several years.
