CHAPTER SEVEN
By Friday morning, Sawyer had had it up to here dealing with Budâs laziness. Christmas was only a few weeks away, and it was time to insist the man pull his weight and do his job right.
His insubordination had been gnawing at him all week. Sawyer had been ignoring a lot of the problems, redoing most of the chores, and heâd told Bud more than once he expected better work out of him. A good manager looked out for the business, and he had a duty to make sure the employees were doing things right.
Unfortunately, nothing was working. Including Bud.
Speaking of... Bud lumbered into the pole barn. Sawyer checked the time. It was an hour before Budâs workday ended. Sawyer had just finished checking cattle and was getting ready to determine the rest of the dayâs work. He scanned the list of chores on the whiteboard.
âDid you check the water tank in the south pasture?â Sawyer asked.
Bud glared at him and didnât answer. Normally, Sawyer would let it go, but not anymore.
âWhatâs wrong?â Sawyer asked. âDidnât you hear me?â
âI heard you, and yes, I checked. Itâs fine.â He scratched his beard. âIâll get the straw down for the steers before I take off.â
âItâs only eleven.â It didnât take an hour to give the steers new straw.
âYeah, so?â He put his hands on his hips.
âYour day ends at noon.â
âWhatâs your point? It takes a while to spread the straw.â
Was this guy being serious? Sawyer ground his teeth together and turned his attention to the whiteboard. One of the items was swapping out the damaged ring feeder in the bull pasture for a new one. Heâd had more pressing tasks to attend to all week, so it still needed to be replaced.
âAfter youâre done with the straw, I need you to take the new ring feeder to the bull pasture. Swap out the old one.â
âWonât have time.â The man eased his body into the driverâs seat of the Bobcat and started it up. The noise of the engine made it impossible to talk. In three strides, Sawyer was next to Bud.
âYou waste a lot of time,â he yelled over the engine.
âWhat?â He gunned the accelerator to make it louder.
âTurn that off.â Sawyer pointed to the ignition.
âSeems to me youâre the one wasting time.â He pointed to the tractor, then the door. âWhatâs the boss going to think about you neglecting the cows to put up wreaths around here?â Then Bud gave him a sarcastic smile, wriggled his fingers and backed the vehicle out of the pole barn.
He couldnât believe the lack of respect this guy had for him. Yeah, Sawyer had ridden out to the forest and cut weeping spruce branches to hang as boughs over the office door. Heâd also made homemade wreaths of juniper and hung them over the exterior doors of the pole barn and stables. But heâd done it on his own time.
The one heâd placed on the front of the tractor had been for Tucker. Heâd known the boy would love it, and he was right.
