âLet Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Thy Foodâ
As the Hippocrates quote above suggests, Nature provides everything we need for the health of our bodies, feelings, and minds. Many of her plants, flowers, trees, grasses, fruits, vegetables, resins, oils, seeds and nuts are medicinal and are in harmony with the human biological system. How we consume these foods is a matter of choice. Some people find that a totally raw diet is the healthiest option, whereas others prefer a combination of raw and cooked foods to support their overall health needs. For many, a diet composed of warm foods is more suitable. There is no right or wrong or better or worse when we are conscious and mindful of our body. For example, both Ayurveda and acupuncture promote the consumption of warm foods, whereas many contemporary spiritual nutritionists are inclined toward prescribing a raw diet.
Attaining and maintaining an acid-to-alkaline ratio within the body is important; however, this cannot be medically or scientifically measured with accuracy. Yet, what can be ascertained is that too much acidity or alkalinity creates imbalance and disease. For example, a few alkaline foods are spinach, lemon, almonds, and millet and a few acid forming foods are corn, lentils, oats, cheese, and coffee. It has been suggested that a ratio of seventy-five percent alkaline to twenty-five percent acid is ideal. Scientists have determined that the body fluids of people who are well incline toward a healthy alkaline pH, whereas a highly acidic internal environment is often more prone to disease.
