The party was in full swing before it was even eight. I was surprised by how many people had shown up, despite the heavy rain and stormy weather, but I also knew it had nothing to do with me. Platypeople just loved partying. Between the music and the singing people, conversation wasn’t really high on anyone’s list but I didn’t mind. It was fun just to have so many people over. Even some of the invited neighbours had come in to say hello and have a drink.

“I need the loo,” Erin declared as she finished her drink. She kissed her girlfriend and waved at me. “I’ll be right back.”

The moment she was gone, Tash pulled me to the side. “I need to tell you something.”

“I’m all ears.”

My best friend shot me the widest grin. “I’m going to propose.”

“Tash! Oh my god, that’s amazing. When? How? Where?”

“I don’t know yet. I think Erin is filming another Project soon so I want ask her when she’s interviewing me.” She checked over her shoulder and continued whispering. “Do you think that’s a good idea?”

“I think it’s a lovely idea. Aaaah, I can’t believe you’re getting married. You did it. You found the one.” Even though I was ecstatic for her, the smallest pang of envy shot through me. My best friend was getting married and I had no one.

“Shh, shh, she’s coming back. Act normal,” Tash hushed as she turned around to her girlfriend like nothing happened.

While the two of them were happily chatting in their lovey dovey way, I glanced at the kitchen where Ivy was pouring her best friend a drink. Jenna said something that made her laugh and more jealousy passed through me. I knew it wasn’t justified but it was hard not to feel a little territorial. After all, I was the new roommate. I’d taken Jenna’s place.

I finished my drink with a big swig, suppressing the urge to cough. “I’m just getting another.”

My friends made a non-committal noise as I made my way over to the kitchen, joining Ivy and Jenna. “Hey, hey.”

Once Ivy noticed me, she stumbled towards me, her cheeks rosy from the alcohol. “Francesss. Are you having fun at your party?”

“Yes, I sure am. Thanks for letting me throw it here.”

She snaked her arm around my waist, leaning into me. “Of course. It’s your birthday, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is.” I swung my arm around her shoulders, trying to avoid Jenna’s inquiring looks. I knew she was trying to figure out if there was something going on between us and maybe it was wrong of me, but I wasn’t opposed to her assuming so. Even if it was only until Ivy set her straight.

Jenna shot me a polite smile. “So how are you liking my old room?”

“It’s nice, I love the skylight,” I replied tersely. I turned to look at Ivy, pulling her closer. “But the best part is my awesome roommate.”

Ivy managed a smile before she broke away. “I need the bathroom!”

Left alone with Jenna, an awkward tension settled onto us.
