Chapter 10

The day had been full of firsts: flowers delivered on her job and now, Desiree’s first time going to Brooke’s house. Although she agreed, she was leery. The greatest temptation known to woman was being alone in a romantic setting with a sexy man.

She thought about a sermon Elder Reed had preached recently on 1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The bottom line had been that God wouldn’t send her into battle without the armor to win or a way to survive the combat wounds. He had recited an example about not giving a College Board test to a kindergartener because that would be a sure way to fail.

Walking with Christ for at least sixteen years, Desiree had gone through many trials. It didn’t matter that she was thirty-one years old, grown, and had been gone from her parents’ home for at least ten years. She was also someone who denied herself Brooke’s affections throughout the work day. God help me.

As a woman striving to live holy unto God, the devil marked her as a constant target for temptation. And right now, she was no different than any other woman caught up in the Valentine’s Day hoopla.

A half hour later, Desiree drove into a revitalized neighborhood in South St. Louis city. After verifying the address, she parked but didn’t get out. Instead, she sat in her car and closed her eyes while her emotions clashed. Or rather, her spirit battled against the devil.

“God, keep me. Your Word says You can keep me from falling. Keep Brooke and me from falling.”

A tap on the window startled her, she opened her eyes. Brooke stood outside, wearing a concerned expression.

“Are you okay, babe?”

Babe. She liked the sound of his endearment as her heart pounded with excitement. “Yeah,” she said with a sigh. Desiree unlocked her door, and Brooke helped her out. Tenderly, he paused to make sure she was bundled against the sudden chill.

After she activated her car alarm, Brooke took her hand and escorted her up a short walkway to his place.

As Desiree cleared the threshold into his townhouse, she blinked. A magnificent table set with stemware, china, and candlelight took her breath away. “Wow.”

“Wow is right. Look at you.” He whistled, helping her remove her coat. “How can you look pretty at work and a few hours later, be just as gorgeous?”

He didn’t wait for an answer. Turning Desiree around, Brooke engulfed her in a hug that she couldn’t deny she indulged in his cologne and the strength of his arms. Traitor, her body scolded. How soon was she giving up the temptation battle?

Slowly, they separated. As she stared into his eyes, pleading he was asking her for permission to kiss her. Swallowing as her heart continued to pound, she nodded.
